Washington, D.C. is the United States’ capital city and its seat of government. Because of this fact, the city attracts more than 20 million tourists each year. While some of the city's small businesses cater to those tourists, others focus on providing services and products for the government. Alternatively, some operate as restaurants or other business types, providing for the one million extra commuters who flood into the city each workday from Virginia and Maryland.
As a whole; Washington is one of the most visited cities in the world just the Lincoln Memorial receives around 6 million visitors each year. Other popular landmarks include the United States Capitol, the National Mall, the Washington Monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the National Archives.
Other than serving as a base for all three branches of the federal government, Washington is also the home to some world class museums, such as the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. There are also currently 177 foreign embassies in the city, as well as many other famous organizations: the American Red Cross, the Human Rights Campaign and the National Geographic Society.
